City Armory FAQ
Answers to common questions about buying firearms, transfers, background checks, and armory services at City Armory in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
When purchasing a firearm from City Armory, you’ll need:
- A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID (typically a North Carolina driver’s license with current address).
- Proof of North Carolina residency if your address isn’t shown on your ID.
- You must be at least 21 for handguns and 18 for long guns.
- You must be legally allowed to own or possess firearms under federal and state law.
- If you have a valid North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit (NCCHP), bring it with you.
You’ll complete ATF Form 4473 and undergo a background check (or permit verification where allowed by law) at the time of purchase.
The ATF requires all buyers to complete Form 4473 and undergo a NICS background check unless a qualifying exemption applies.
Most purchases are completed the same day, as long as your background check is approved without delay. If you have a valid North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit, the process is often faster once your 4473 is complete and payment is finished.
Delays can occur if the NICS background check is flagged for further review. In those cases, the review may take up to three business days, and we cannot complete the transfer until we receive a final response.
For online orders, choose In-Store Pickup at checkout. You’ll receive an email when your order is ready at our Wake Forest location. Bring:
- Your government-issued photo ID.
- The payment card used for the order (if applicable).
For firearms, we’ll complete Form 4473 and the background check in store before you leave with your purchase.
Yes. City Armory proudly offers FFL transfer services for firearms purchased online or from other dealers.
To begin a transfer:
- Contact us before you order so we can confirm details and provide our FFL information to the seller if needed.
- Many major online retailers already have our FFL on file. If not, the seller can email us at info@cityarmorync.com to request a copy.
- Once the firearm arrives and is logged into our books, we’ll notify you when it’s ready for pickup (usually within one business day of check-in).
Transfer pricing:
- $30 transfer fee for up to five firearms on the same 4473/background check.
- $60 per NFA/suppressor transfer.
All transfers require a completed Form 4473 and a successful background check, just like any other firearm purchase.
For full details and step-by-step instructions, see our Transfers page in the main navigation.

Absolutely. City Armory specializes in one-on-one guidance—no pressure, no ego, and no jargon you have to pretend to understand.
We’ll talk through how you plan to use the firearm (home defense, concealed carry, hunting, or range use), your experience level, and your preferences for size, recoil, and features. From there, we’ll walk you through a short list of options that make sense for you, not for a checklist.
Our goal is simple: equip you with confidence, not just gear.
Yes. You can bring your own optics and accessories or choose from what we carry in-store.
Our services include:
- Optic mounting and leveling for pistols, carbines, and rifles.
- Boresighting to get you on paper before live-fire zeroing.
- Accessory installation (lights, lasers, slings, stocks, etc.).
When you purchase optics and mounts from City Armory, we offer free basic installation as part of the setup.
For more advanced work or full duty/defensive setups, see our Optics & Mounting services page for package options and pricing.
Delayed: If your background check comes back as “Delayed,” we must hold the firearm until we receive a final decision or the transaction times out under applicable law. We’ll contact you with updates as we receive them.
Denied: If your background check is denied, we cannot transfer the firearm to you. We’ll follow all legal requirements regarding the disposition or return of the firearm to the originating FFL or seller. In some cases, shipping and/or restocking fees may apply.
If you believe a denial or delay is in error, we can point you toward the appropriate NICS appeal and state-level resources so you can request a review of your record.
