Cerakote: More Than a Custom Finish

When most people first hear about Cerakote, they think about color.

Flat Dark Earth. OD Green. Graphite Black. Burnt Bronze. Custom patterns. Matching parts. A rifle or pistol that looks a little different from everything else on the rack.

And yes, Cerakote can absolutely give a firearm a clean, custom look.

But that is only part of the story.

At City Armory, we do not look at Cerakote as decoration. We look at it as a protective finish with a purpose. A firearm is a tool, and whether that tool is carried daily, kept for home defense, used in the field, or built for the range, it should be protected, maintained, and finished with intention.

Cerakote is not just about making a firearm look better.

It is about helping it hold up better.

What Is Cerakote?

Cerakote is a thin-film, ceramic-based protective coating used across the firearms, automotive, aerospace, industrial, and outdoor industries. In the firearms world, it is commonly applied to slides, frames, receivers, barrels, handguards, controls, magazines, optics mounts, and accessories.

The simplest way to explain it is this: Cerakote adds a durable protective layer without adding unnecessary bulk.

That matters on a firearm. Firearms have tight tolerances, moving parts, fitted components, and areas where too much coating thickness can cause problems. Cerakote is designed to provide protection while maintaining a relatively thin profile, which is one reason it has become so common on firearm parts.

From a performance standpoint, Cerakote is known for corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, hardness, and durability. Cerakote references standardized testing methods such as ASTM B117 for corrosion resistance and ASTM D4060 for abrasion resistance. These tests allow coatings to be compared under controlled conditions, but they should not be treated as a perfect prediction of exactly how long a finish will last in the real world.

Compared to traditional firearm finishes like bluing, Cerakote generally offers stronger corrosion protection and more customization options. Cerakote reports that in ASTM B117 salt spray testing, its coating lasted significantly longer than standard bluing and stainless steel in that controlled test environment. That does not mean a Cerakote finish is indestructible, but it does mean it is built to provide serious protection against corrosion when properly applied.

Cerakote also provides resistance to many common chemicals and solvents. That matters because firearms are regularly exposed to oils, cleaners, carbon, sweat, moisture, and environmental contaminants.

But the coating is only part of the equation.

A good Cerakote job starts long before the coating is sprayed. Parts have to be properly disassembled, cleaned, degreased, blasted, coated, and cured. Shortcuts in any of those steps can affect the durability and appearance of the final product.

That is why we treat Cerakote as a process, not just a paint job.

The durability of the final finish depends on the product, the prep work, the application, the cure, and how the firearm is used. Done correctly, Cerakote gives the customer a protective, purpose-built finish that can stand up to real use while still allowing for clean, custom design.

Why Cerakote Matters

Firearms are exposed to wear.

That wear may come from holsters, range bags, field use, sweat, moisture, cleaning solvents, carbon, weather, or regular handling. Over time, factory finishes can wear down. Surfaces can scratch, fade, or corrode. Even firearms that spend most of their time in a safe can pick up marks through handling, storage, and transport.

Cerakote helps add a layer of protection.

For customers who carry daily, that protection matters. For hunters, it matters. For rifles that see outdoor use, truck use, range days, or hard training, it matters. For heirloom firearms or custom builds, it can also help preserve the firearm while giving it a finish that reflects the owner’s style.

The goal is not just to make the firearm look good on day one.

The goal is to build something that still looks right after use.

Function Comes First

A firearm can look impressive and still be poorly finished.

That is not the standard.

At City Armory, our approach starts with purpose. Before we talk colors and patterns, we want to understand how the firearm is being used.

  • Is it a daily carry pistol?

  • A home defense firearm?

  • A hunting rifle?

  • A duty-style setup?

  • A competition gun?

  • A sentimental piece being restored or refreshed?

  • A custom build meant to stand out?

The answer should shape the finish.

A daily carry gun may benefit from a practical, low-profile color. A hunting rifle may need earth tones or a camo-inspired pattern that fits the environment. A range build may allow for more personality. A defensive firearm may call for something clean, simple, and proven.

There is room for creativity, but the finish should never work against the mission.

Good design has restraint.

Not Just Cosmetic

There is nothing wrong with wanting a firearm that looks good.

We do too.

But the best custom work is not just cosmetic. It is intentional.

The color choices should make sense. The contrast should be balanced. The controls, frame, slide, barrel, and small parts should work together visually. The result should look like it belongs on the firearm, not like random parts were coated just to be different.

That is especially true for multi-color builds.

A clean two-tone pistol can look sharp and timeless. A rifle with the right combination of earth tones can look purpose-built. A subtle accent color can add personality without taking over the entire firearm.

The difference is planning.

That is part of what we help customers work through. Some people come in knowing exactly what they want. Others have a general idea but need help narrowing it down. Either way, our job is to guide the process and make sure the final product makes sense.

The City Armory Standard

Every Cerakote project that comes through City Armory is handled in-house.

That matters to us.

It means we can control the process, communicate directly with the customer, and stand behind the finished work. We are not just taking an order and shipping it somewhere else. We are doing the work here, with the same attention to detail we were trained to follow at Cerakote’s factory.

That includes proper prep, careful application, and a finish that fits the firearm.

We also believe communication is part of the service. If a customer has an idea that may not translate well, we will say so. If a color combination needs adjustment, we will talk through it. If a firearm has limitations, wear, or parts that may affect the outcome, we will explain that before the work begins.

That is how it should be.

Custom work requires trust.

Built for Real-World Use

Cerakote is a natural fit for the way we think about firearms.

Security. Sport. Leisure.

  • A defensive firearm should be reliable and protected.

  • A sporting firearm should be maintained and ready.

  • A personal build should reflect the owner without losing sight of function.

Cerakote supports all three.

For some customers, it is about protecting a firearm they rely on. For others, it is about restoring life to something worn. For others, it is about building something personal and distinct.

All of those reasons are valid.

The key is doing the work with purpose.

Final Thoughts

Cerakote is more than a custom finish.

It is protection, personalization, and craftsmanship brought together. Done correctly, it can help a firearm stand up to use while giving it a clean, intentional look that fits its role.

Whether it is a carry pistol, a hunting rifle, a custom AR, a 1911, a 2011, or a well-used firearm that deserves new life, the finish should match the mission.

That is the standard we believe in.

City Armory.
The pursuit of Security, Sport, and Leisure.
